During the 18th century the Chinese government constructed a series of over ten western style palaces and yards within the large complex of Yuanmingyuan in Beijing. This area was designed by F. Giuseppe Castiglione, an Italian missionary, and P. Michael Benoist from France and constructed by Chinese artisans under their supervision. The Yuanmingyuan complex was destroyed by Anglo-French forces in 1860.
