Dr. Mohammad Jalal Abbasi-Shavazi is Associate Professor and Head of the Division of Population Research of the University of Tehran; & Associate, Demography and Sociology Program, Research School of Social Sciences, Australian National University (ANU). Since 1998, Dr. Abbasi has been working on the fertility transition and family change in Iran. He has completed a comprehensive study of fertility changes in Iran over the last three decades, and is currently working on analyses of the Iran Fertility Transition Survey 2002 and the Iran Low Fertility Survey 2005. His book on Fertility Transition in Iran, co-authored with Peter McDonald and Meimanat Hosseini-Chavoshi, 2009, won the World Prize for the Book of the Year of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Most recently, Dr. Abbasi has been collaborating in the design of appropriate developmental idealism measures suitable both in Iran and around the world. He has been honored with the 2011 United Nations Population Award.
